Macarthur Centre for Sustainable Living has been established to inspire the community to embrace an ‘environmental conscience’ and adopt sustainable life choices. One of the child care programs offered to local parents and guardians is the Little Explorers Program. This program focuses on providing young children with opportunities to learn about environmental sustainability through engaging and interactive experiences.
This presentation by Dr Peter Andersen, from the University of Wollongong (UOW) and Carolan Nicholson and Fiona Barber from Macarthur Centre for Sustainable Living (MCSL) will discuss a research project shared between UOW and MCSL that sought to identify and detail the specific pedagogical approaches of the Little Explorers Program and their effectiveness in inspiring the participating children, and their parents/guardians to embrace ‘environmental conscience’ and adopt sustainable life choices. Interviews were conducted with MCSL staff and parents and guardians of the children who participated in the Little Explorers Program. The findings demonstrate the invaluable contribution that community-based organisations such as MCSL make to empowering young children and their parents and guardians to do something positive in the face of a global crisis.
